October 1, 2009Did you know? The San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) offers a humongous collection of online research databases that are available to you, with a SFPL library card! If you live anywhere in California, you can get a free SFPL library card (it is not restricted to residents of San Francisco!). Just bring proof of residence in California when you visit any SFPL location.
What online research databases does SFPL have that augments what CRC Library offers? Here are a few research databases that might pique your interest:
New York Times Historical (1851 – 3 years ago) – Offers full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue. The collection includes digital reproductions providing access to every page from every available issue.
Ethnic Newswatch – Full text articles in both English and Spanish of more than 250 newspapers, magazines, and journals of the ethnic and minority press.
Morningstar Investment Research Center – Access Morningstar financial data on stocks, funds and industries. You will also find analyst reports, portfolio screenings and other tools for making investment decisions.
Mergent Online – U.S. and international company financials, ratios, news, and annual reports.
Oxford Music Online – Includes The Oxford Companion to Music (2002), which offers more than 8,000 articles on composers, performers, conductors, individual works, instruments and notation, forms and genres, and the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and Grove Dictionary of Opera online.
Learning Express Library – Online practice tests, based on the official exams for SAT, GED, GRE, GMAT, Civil Service jobs, ASVAB and many more.
Chinese Magazines (Qikan) – 200 current, popular Chinese language magazines published in China. Available in either traditional or simplified characters.
Informe! – Una colección de revistas hispánicas con textos completes. Abarca negocios, salud, tecnología, cultura, temas de actualidad y otras materias. Full text of popular Hispanic magazines.
Russian Newspapers (East View) – Newspapers in Russian from official sources, independent media and partisan publications. Includes several English-language newspapers.
Rosetta Stone Online Language Learning – Interactive, online language exercises for beginning to intermediate learners. Languages include Spanish, French, German, Italian, Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Russian, Greek and English.
Ancestry Library Edition – Resources for genealogical and historical research. Includes census, military, court, land, probate, vital and church records; directories; passenger lists, and more.
